Citizens Police Academy

The LU Citizens Police Academy is a block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of Lamar Police Department's officers, civilian personnel, and policies. It consists of a series of 5 sessions during the semester. The instruction is comprehensive, covering different facets of police work. Officers, supervisors, and specialized personnel conduct each instructional block.

PURPOSE

  • Provide training and information to citizens so that they may become active participants in helping make our community safer and make informed decisions and judgments about the police department and police activity.
  • Enhance understanding of issues facing diverse groups and dispel myths and misconceptions which may have developed over time.
  • Make the participants and the police officers aware of how each group depends on the other to produce public safety and the quality of life desired and deserved by the citizens.

WHAT TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED?
Instruction on these and other topics will consist of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experiences:

  • Police training
  • Communications
  • Alcohol and drugs
  • Safety
  • Patrol operations
  • Community-oriented policing philosophy

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME AS A PARTICIPANT?
The academy is conducted in a relaxed and casual manner, we ask that you enjoy your time with us, but we do encourage you to ask questions. We can and will discuss any issues you may have. At the end of the academy, you will evaluate and inform us on how we can improve the Citizens Police Academy. The Department’s Goal is to build a closer bond with the LU Community.

Please note: This is not an application to become a certified police officer.

Who Can Attend?

Any member of the LU community: students, faculty, staff

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Participants must complete 70% of the sessions
