Marks, a junior multidisciplinary studies major from Beaumont, is among the many first-generation students at Â鶹ÊÓƵ who are paving the way for future generations in their families.

Being recognized as a first-generation student carries special meaning for Marks, who said her educational journey has been shaped by determination and a willingness to overcome obstacles.

“I am very blessed and thankful to be recognized as a first-generation student,” Marks said. “Through determination and resilience, I have overcome many challenges and obstacles that once seemed impossible and for that I am very proud of myself.”

First-generation students are those whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree. At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, the First-Generation Student of the Month recognition highlights students who demonstrate academic dedication, leadership and perseverance while navigating the unique challenges often associated with being the first in their families to pursue higher education.

The First-Generation Student of the Month program celebrates the accomplishments of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s first-generation students and recognizes the impact they have on the campus community through their hard work and determination.
