A unique and exciting interdisciplinary undergraduate degree plan that advances a twenty-first century vision for the history degree as a dynamic major with wide-ranging, real-world applications. Balancing historians’ critical thinking, research, and writing skills with valuable sets of technical expertise, the Applied History degree plan multiplies majors’ arsenal of marketable skills and opens up a rich landscape of professional career opportunities.
The Applied History degree plan includes a mandatory internship for students to earn real-world work experience, whether at one of the many museums or archives across Southeast Texas, at a television station, or in a business or industrial workplace, depending upon the student’s preference and career aspirations.
The Applied History track further requires a minor in Communication, with specific courses that teach skills in media writing, screenwriting, digital editing, film production, and historical documentary production.
Finally, students pursuing the Applied History degree plan also earn a geographic information system (GIS) certificate through the geology department, gaining the skills to locate, map, preserve, catalog, analyze, and share historical data, while determining spatial and temporal relationships between historical documents, places, and people.
